Lombard Street

Lombard Street is a street in San Francisco that is famous for being steep and crooked.  Since it is one of the major tourist attractions in the city,  we decided that a trip to San Francisco would not be complete until we walked down Lombard Street.   The street has eight tight hairpin turns in one block.  We rode the Powell-Hyde cable car and got off at the top of the curvy section of Lombard Street.

All the homes and landscaping is beautiful!

You get a great view of the city and of Coit Tower in the background.

Steps with handrails are located on each side of the street for pedestrian traffic.

In 1999 a "Crooked Street Task Force" tried to solve traffic problems around the winding section of Lombard Street.  In 2001 the task force decided it would not be legal to permanently close the block to vehicular traffic.  In the picture below you can see that it was almost a steady stream of cars coming down the hill.

From the bottom of the street looking up, you can see the cars and pedestrians making their way down.

I would think it would be hard to drive a motorcycle down the hill since you have to go so slow?  What do you think Linda Walser?

Whew!  Made it to the bottom.   I'm just thankful that I don't have to climb back up all of those steps!

Couldn't help but to take a picture of the beautiful entryway.

This was around the corner from Lombard Street.  It was such a pretty stairway.....I could call this place home.
